Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) mean applying Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to road transport.
ITS-based services and applications will bring down the number of road victims and reduce road traffic's energy consumption and CO2 exhausts, and will contribute to a more efficient transport system. The costs of traffic congestion – estimated at 1% of the European GDP – could be reduced by up to 10% through the deployment of ITS, which could also prevent more than 5000 deaths in road accidents
Examples of ITS applications in road transport include urban and motorway traffic management and control systems, electronic toll collection and route navigation. Services targeted are pure public services or privately-implemented services under PPP agreements.
