I started off at the BBC as a producer and then worked in prisons for 3 years teaching offenders to broadcast. It taught me about the power of citizen journalism; that we can have access to more accurate information if the person holding the microphone has first hand experience of the issue.
I set up On Road Media in 2005 to train people from marginalised communities - those who are not represented in mainstream media - in social media. We train people to produce powerful podcasts and video blogs and to set up social networks to connect, share information and contribute to wider public debates.
Along with partner organisations we recently won the Catalyst Community award for www.savvychavvy.com (‘chavvy’ being the Romany word for child), a social network for young Gypsies and Travellers in the UK.
We also deliver courses to voluntary sector organisations and journalists across the UK.
