The first digital edition of 'The New Londoners', a magazine whose aim is to build understanding between London communities old and new, was published on 17 June 2010. In addition, the magazine will be issued quarterly instead of annually.

'The New Londoners' provides a platform for new Londoners to convey their stories directly to all Londoners in order to raise awareness of the lives of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, and celebrate their positive contribution to life in London.

In the Editor-in-Chief letter, Ros Lucas wrote: "by going digital, we hope to reach many more people and to provide an interactive platform for stories and comments." (...) "It is now easier to tell us your views, your stories, by posting your comment on the New Londoners website www.thenewlondoners.co.uk/ or by finding us on facebook and twitter."

This first digital edition of 'The New Londoners' (June 2010) focuses on the contribution that migrants make to society; it aims to bust the myths surrounding the impact of migration into London and to show how much society is enriched by it and why migration is necessary for the economic well-being of the capital city.

'The New Londoners' is produced by the Migrants Resource Centre with the input of many volunteers and users from the organisation's Migrant and Refugee Media Action Group.

Background information:

The Migrants Resource Centre (MRC) works with migrants and refugees and in partnership with other agencies, to effect social justice and change, enabling migrants and refugees to fully participate in this society. They work with displaced people from all over the world from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. MRC provides a place to receive assistance, to learn, to meet with others and to help communities develop.

The first issue of 'The New Londoners' was launched during Refugee Week 2007. It won the highly commended prize of the Mayor of London Press awards, in two categories: Best coverage in faith, black, Asian or minority ethnic press and Best visual/creative material. Many organisations described the magazine as a pioneering work and an outstanding achievement.
