The new functionality of the Portuguese electronic identity Card (the Citizen Card - Cartão de Cidadão, in Portuguese) was presented at a ceremony that took place on 18 May 2010. It enables the card holders to access online the Library of the European Information Centre 'Jacques Delors' (Centro de Informação Europeia Jacques Delors - CIEJD, in Portuguese) in order to search for publications and order them online.

The project was developed by the CIEJD with the cooperation of the Agency for the Public Services Modernisation (AMA). The secretary of State for Administrative Modernisation, Maria Manuel Leitão Marques, the Secretary of State for the European Affairs, Pedro Lourtie and the President of the AMA, Elísio Borges Maia, attended the presentation event.

The aim of the project is for the Citizen Card to replace the library card. Thanks to this new functionality, the procedures will be dematerialised, the online registration will be streamlined and a series of new online services will be provided, including the online update of personal data and the online booking of a publication.

The users who choose to visit the premises of the CIEJD library should contact the library office first and register to its databases with their Citizen Card. After registering, the Citizen Card holders will be able to search for the publications they need, go to the respective shelve to pick them up and finally make the request at the library counter. It is also possible for a card holder to visit online the digital library and register. Upon registration, the user can search across all publications available and order the publication/book online; the online order will be then delivered at home by regular post.

CIEJD is the first library of the country to offer this service to the Citizen Card holders. This service is added in the already long list of services that Citizen Card provides; these, among many others, include: the online change of address notification, online information on the wedding process, the online business start-up, booking medical appointments online, etc.
