An interactive GIS viewer has been recently launched and integrated to the Natura 2000 network.
Natura 2000 is a European network of nature protection areas established under the 1992 Habitats Directive; its scope is to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
The European Commission, in collaboration with the European Environment Agency, has recently developed and launched a viewer to be integrated to the Natura 2000 network. This interactive tool, built on GIS technologies, allows the users to explore the sites presented in the network by accessing street maps, satellite images and extra information on the sites related species and habitats of interest.
For the first time, thanks to the viewer, all sites are made available on a European scale; this allows not only professionals, such as developers, land planners, researchers and government authorities, but also the public to have an overview of the largest coordinated network of conservation areas in the world.
