In June 2009, the Pre-Raphaelite collection from Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery became available to the public online. The art of the Pre-Raphaelites will from now be studied online using computer technology and thus, making the users feel as if seeing the real artwork in a museum.
The depth of the collection is remarkable. The computer technology used offers perfect definition to the screen along with an efficient Zoom functionality employed in order to study the Pre-Raphaelites artworks. Some frays in the canvas, pencil etching or brushstrokes can gain a perfect view on the screen.
Using the deep zoom technology, the user can absorb the detail of each artwork and admire the colours used by the world-acclaimed artists. Each click on each uploaded on the website artwork illustrates the Pre-Raphaelite style through an interactive format. The process of cataloguing, research and photographing the artworks which took almost one year is still ongoing.
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will be the first museum to offer such a clarity when studying these 2 000 famous and decorative works. Led by the Birmingham City Council, the project was funded with help from the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) for the research, the provision of photographic equipment and the development of the website. Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said: "The website should increase the number of virtual visits to the Museum and Art Gallery and can only enhance the city's reputation internationally as a centre for culture".
