On 20 January 2009, the Brussels Institute for the Management of the Environment (referred to as “Brussels Environment”) announced that a new section of its website has now been devoted to informing the public on the state of the environment in the Brussels-Capital region.

Brussels Environment’s missions range from studying, monitoring and managing the air, water, land, waste, noise and nature (including biodiversity), to issuing environment-related permits and controlling their observance, as well as taking part in national and international talks and supporting educational environment projects in Brussels schools. In addition, Brussels Environment has been developing its activities towards the eco-building field and the connections between health and the environment.

The experts of Brussels Environment regularly publish a “Report on the State of the Environment” in line with a legal obligation which was laid down in 1992. The newly launched section of the Brussels Environment website is intended to facilitate the citizens’ access to this type of information by putting it online, together with related scientific and technical information.

The new web pages feature an illustrated synthesis of the state of the environment for the period 2003-2006 along with a detailed report containing a set of technical chapters. Other contents include all the documents related to plans and programmes (outcomes, impact reports), documented sheets, analysis and technical reports, as well as a selection of studies carried out on behalf of Brussels Environment, and whose upload will take place gradually.
