The European Commission launched on 4 February 2003 a new eLearning website. The eLearningEuropa.info portal will provide information on Community initiatives in this field, such as the eLearning programme (2004-2006) which is currently being adopted, but also links to national initiatives, both public and private, and contributions from experts on subjects ranging from "e-Literacy" to the situation in the candidate countries.
According to Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Education and Culture, e-learning is an important component of the knowledge-based economy. It will be crucial to achieve the objective agreed at the European Council in Lisbon in March 2000 to make the EU a leader in the knowledge economy.
Mrs Reding said that the site will be 'a forum for dialogue to encourage public authorities, businesses and civil society to devote greater resources to e-learning and to work together more.' The new website is therefore aimed at a wide audience, both users and content providers. This will make it possible to disseminate best practice in the use of new communication technologies in education and will also allow users to search for projects under way and contact the people responsible. The site also provides access to national policies to promote e-learning, not only in the Member States but also in the candidate countries and the countries of the European Economic Area.
