The Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation announced on 06/02/03 that telecoms company TDC had been awarded a contract to deliver the basic technology for digital signatures to the public sector in Denmark. Through the scheme, Danish citizens will be able to exchange confidential information, such as VAT returns and income tax reports, with the public authorities in a secure manner via the Internet.

TDC is expected to be ready to deliver digital signatures very shortly. The company still has to secure agreements with the necessary public authorities and private companies, which can then offer citizens secure digital access to services. The problem of who is to pay for issuing citizens' certificates has been solved as the Government - through its agreement with TDC - has ensured all citizens a free certificate.
