Complete title:
UNESCO’s Basic Texts on the Information Society

Description (short summary):
This publication of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was produced on the occasion of the World Summit on the Information Society whose first and second phases were respectively held in Geneva in December 2003 and in Tunis in November 2005.

This present book is part of a series of titles summarising some of the most essential issues related to the development of the Information Society. As such, it is intended to take the measure of the upheavals brought about by the emergence of ICT, and deal with its potential for development, the difficulties encountered, possible solutions, and the various projects implemented by UNESCO and its partners.

This book is composed of samples of the UNESCO’s official texts (including congresses declarations) which contribute to defining what the Information Society ought to be, in line with the organisation’s mandate which leads it to promote the concept of ‘knowledge societies’. The debate goes beyond purely technical issues. The structure of the document follows four subject areas, namely education, science, culture and communication.
