Description

This session, organised by DG INFSO of the European Commission, is baring the title ‘Towards Digital Agenda targets: Patients' access to their health data’ and aims to provide an overview of the Digital Agenda for Europe with a specific focus on eHealth. It is taking place during the 14th European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) from 5-8 October in Gastein, Austria.

The challenging target of enabling Europeans to have access to their health data (key action 13 in the Commission Communication a Digital Agenda for Europe) will be addressed in detail with experts in this area. The discussion will focus on how such action could contribute towards enhancing the empowerment and better care of patients.

As stated in the Digital Agenda for Europe, the deployment of eHealth technologies in Europe can improve the quality of care, reduce medical costs and foster independent living in remote places. New telemedicine services, including online medical consultations and improved emergency care, with the help of portable devices have allowed freedom of movement that patients have not previously enjoyed until now.

As with any online service, user empowerment is a prerequisite for its success. That said, 'real' empowerment of users as citizens and patients, in the sense of being able to 'own' or to consult their own electronic medical record, and even make efforts to self-manage their own health conditions, is still pending. Within the following years, it is the European Commission’s priority to cooperate with the Member States in order to equip Europeans with secure online access to their medical health data by 2015.
