Case Abstract

Facility based on official city maps data to locate public offices. It aims to locate public offices and services, offering an intuitive interface.

The cartography used is provided by the National Geographic Institute.

Implementation and Management Approach

The project is the result of co-operation among several public organizations:

- Dirección General para el impulso de la Administración Electrónica.

- Dirección General para el Desarrollo de la Sociedad de la Información, Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio.

- Dirección General del Instituto Geográfico Nacional, Ministerio de Fomento

- Dirección General del Catastro, Ministerio de Economía y Hacienda

- Instituto Nacional de Estadística


Technology solution

The service is offered as a ofrece "generic brand” so that it can be personalized to follow the web stile of the different organisms. The base software is the following:

- Postgres 8.1.5, as data base (free BSD license).

- Postgis 1.1.6,  spatial data extension for Postgres.

- Tomcat 5.5, servlet container.

- JDK 5.0,  (Java Developer kit).

- Mapserver, open software maps server.

- OpenLayers, web client for maps visualization.

Track record of sharing

The project is opened to share the service specifications and implementation details with other administrative bodies in Spain or across Europe that might be interested in.

Lessons learnt

- This is a case study of trade offs between in house developments and external services.

- When administrative bodies do not get some direct advantage of a service implementation is slow.

- Is cadastral data the best input for a city map?
