ePractice.eu accessible?

18 July 2009 | 992 Visits | Rating: 4.7 (maximum:5)

As some people may already know, the ePractice.eu portal will be relaunched next year. Design and development work for the relaunch is already underway. It will not only bring more features for the user community, but also a new design and layout. One focus of the relaunch will be on the accessibility of the portal, i.e. on improving the way people with disabilities can interact with the site, the community and the content.

My company, empirica, is responsible for the accessibility support to the developers and designers of the ePractice.eu team. Over the past years we have been lucky enough to gather an ever increasing amount of experience with the issue of web accessibility. This experience tells us one thing for sure: ask the users! And this is what we want to do with the newly formed "ePractice.eu Accessible" community.

We would like to cordially invite the ePractice.eu users - and in particular those with disabilities - to get in touch with us and with each other, to discuss how the accessibility of the site can be improved. In a first step we are above all interested in your experiences with the site as it is today. We know that there are some issues with accessibility right now but would like to hear from you: How accessible is the portal for you? Do you have trouble, e.g. when using a screen-reader or surfing with the keyboard, or when simply surfing with your browser? Are there areas of the site that you like/dislike especially?

Looking forward to your replies.

That's good news Ingo. The portal will gain from those accessibility features; I'll spread the word.

Great News...

Epractice portal is already a big contribution to the field. I think users with disabilities are very important.

  • I think the portal should be available in different languages but the blogs should be kept English
  • Also some external links can be put on the portal. Especially government links can be included,
  • For the blind a audio version should be provided,
  • Some important informatics events can be broadcasted live on the portal,

As a result; I believe the new portal will serve better to the community.

yes it is

ePractice is a good resouce with a lot useful information, but I don't find here real time quotes, finance signals and chart. Whats why I need to go to another finance portal like http://fxnonstop.com

This is real consultation.

There is a tendency in the world to do something, ask people what they think and call it consultation - this way, to take lesson's learned and to ask people what they want is the true road - excellent. Local administrations take note!

encouraging approach

it will be very usefull to identify ways to gather opinions on accessibility.

Online questionnaires or small pop-up questions in order to rate the services provided by ePractice would be very usefull.

No doubt that you'll obtain many positive answers and proposals.I would propose that we could have a space offering news and links to european sites treating the topic of communication and use of tools for the INFORMATION SOCIETY.

example for France: VOX INTERNET  http://www.voxinternet.fr/index.php

Dear all,

I would like to thank you for your initial feedback, which I found very encouraging and helpful. I hope that we will now be able to "activate" also some of the ePractice community members with disabilities to share their experiences.

I agree with Erdem that audio descriptions for video content are a necessary addition, as are sub-titles for people with hearing disabilities. The effort for this is however not to be neglected and we will have to find ways to also motivate external content providers to add those features. Many of the videos that can currently be found in the TV section would not need much audio-description, since they are mostly inteviews. Transcribing those is however another matter...

The exchange with the ePractice users is the key concern of this community and, as I said, I am hoping for fruitful discussions. We have already thought about methods such as online surveys. I think we will launch at least one in the coming months.

Further to this, exchange of documents, links and other resources is more than welcome. The ePractice Accessible community allows for this (or should). If you are experiencing difficulties with uploading content, please get in touch.

So much for now. Hope to talk to you soon.

Ingo
