Environmental Democracy via ICT

“Environmental democracy” reflects increasing recognition that environmental issues must be addressed by all those affected by their outcome. Access to environmental information for all is integral to environmental democracy’s concept. Citizens can become active participants in identifying and resolving issues in all levels when informed accurately with basic facts about the quality of their environment. The discussion on environmental democracy entails a plethora of different concepts and values such as democracy, citizens’ engagement, ICTs, access to information, eDemocracy, eParticipation and many more. If examined alone all these notions cannot lead to coherent perspectives on how environmental democracy could be perceived, let alone on how to evaluate ICT tools role in its advancement. Therefore linkages between these concepts need to be drawn. “Environmental Democracy via ICT” community aims to inform and discuss issues on environmental policy of the EU and address their impact on citizens’ everyday life to the ePractice.eu community members. It also wishes to provide and communicate information, news, and publications etc. about pertinent issues, projects etc. from the eParticipation and eGovernment agenda. In this effort a co-funded EU project U@MARENOSTRUM, will be used as a case to indicate the objectives and the potentialities of eParticipation projects addressing the aforementioned issue of environmental democracy.
