Case Abstract

“Digital Identity” is an exhibition held at the Sa Nostra Cultural Centre (Palma) which presents the concepts and the basic tools for creating and managing a digital identity. Following the sentence from Anil Dash, “I am the primary and principal source of information on myself”, “Digital Identity” is a representation of ourselves, “auto constructed” on the web when we create a web domain, publish texts, photos, video, geographical localisations or simply when we leave traces of ourselves on the Internet though interactions, communications or interventions which we carry out with other digital individuals. The project includes the use of web spaces by a mannequin called Josomid, the host and reporter of the project. In all those virtual spaces, Josomid has been finding out about the construction of digital identity and has been reflecting on the topic. It has published photographs and videos on fotologs and Youtube. In addition, to further promote social relationships over the Internet, it is working on its positioning in cyberspace through spaces for content and relations, like Twitter and Orkut. It is also profiling its digital identity based on the music listened to via LastFM.

Implementation and Management Approach

“Digital Identity” is part of the homonym cultural project organized by the Sa Nostra Fundation and the IBIT Foundation, with the collaboration of IB3 TV and IB3 radio. The exhibition has been curated by Bel Llodrà, coordinator of the Department of Digital Communications at IBIT, and Margalida Castells, from ALEA Cultura i Patrimoni.

Around the exhibition, many activities (i.e. conferences and speeches, film sessions, teacher training courses, guided visits and videocast-podcast workshops for teenagers and adults) have been scheduled.

The official website includes practical information, a catalogue of digital identities and the results of an online questionnaire about the digital identity.

Technology solution

Open sources have been used when available. 2.0 tools and participatory tools have been priorized

Impact, innovation and results

Impact

The expected impact includes two ideas:
- To reinforce the visibility of the concepts approached in the exhibition.
- To position the organizers as institutions interested in the digital literacy and to help to create links with other national and international institutions with similar interests (digital literacy, e-inclusion, etc).
During the fall of 2008, the project has started to be disseminated at an European level.

Track record of sharing

The project is having a deep impact into the society and the media, at a regional level. After the venue of Palma (Majorca, Balearic Islands), between Novembre the 6th 2008 and January 30th 2009 the exhibition will be held on the islands of Minorca and Ibiza. Guided tours, an updated website, didactic activities and teacher training courses will be included.

The responsible institutions are opened to move the exhibition to other locations and to work for the adaptation of the project to other languages. Do not hesitate to contact us.

Lessons learnt

Lesson 1 - Digital actions can have effects on the construction of the digital identity.

Lesson 2 - Digital identity is a need as well as a requirement within the net society, specially for younger people. Nobody can avoid to have a digital representation

Lesson 3 - Visibility, popularity and recognition must be taken into account on the net as well as on conventional media.
